Sentinel-5 structure andthermal mass dummies

The challenge

Airbus Defence and Space GmbH is developing an earth observation UV-VIS-NIR-SWIR spectrometer for the Sentinel-5/UVNS Instrument Mission (Copernicus Programme) for the European Space Agency (ESA). During the course of the process, the provision of structure and thermal mass dummies for qualification and laboratory tests is required.

RST Rostock System-Technik was commissioned with the development and manufacturing of the structure and thermal mass dummies for the individual telescopes of the spectrometer.

The solution

Based on the original spectrometer, RST constructed simplified structures from a manufacturing view, whilst adhering to the thermal and mechanical-structural properties as well as the mass including its centre of gravity. Furthermore, the dummies had to correspond to the flight hardware laboratory conditions (ISO-5). The structure and thermal mass dummies were then manufactured, assembled in our in-house clean room and equipped with measuring systems.
