High-resolutionmicroscope foruse on the ISS

The challenge

Commissioned by the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt [German Space and Aviation Centre] (DLR), Airbus Defence and Space develops a high-resolution microscope for use on the International Space Station (ISS). The plan is to install the optical device on a centrifuge rotor, enabling examinations of biomedical samples under various conditions of gravitational force.

The solution

RST Rostock System-Technik accompanied the project phases A (feasibility study) and B (concept phase). Within the course of concept development, our experts addressed the following items specifically: 

  • Electronics of the experiment block 
  • Electronics for the communication module (centrifuge, microscope, European data rack and ground station) 
  • Electronics for the power supply 
  • Overall system software 

Currently, the project is being continued in phases C and D1 in order to prepare the experiment for use on the ISS.
