On 24.01.24, the annual FERCHAU Aviation Group New Year's Partner Network Meeting took place. Relevant guest lectures from the aerospace & defence sector are an integral part of this traditional meeting of partners, customers and suppliers of the FERCHAU Aviation Group. This year's speakers included representatives from a consortium around RST Rostock System-Technik.
The focus of the joint research work is on testing new solutions in the field of alternative aviation propulsion systems using small and medium-sized aircraft. Unmanned drones in particular have the advantage that technologies with transfer potential to civil aviation can initially be developed and tested on a small, safe scale. For example, RST developed an intelligent (liquid hydrogen) LH2 tank system for a fuel cell-powered drone together with the Center of Applied Aeronautical Sciences (ZAL), the University of Rostock and the company BaltiCo. An upcoming research project, also involving Breezer Aircraft, focuses on the development of an innovative propulsion system for ultralight aircraft based on fuel cells.
One important takeaway of the presentation: cooperation between diverse partner organizations with complementary skills and perspectives is a clear driver for creative, innovative technological solutions. But it wasn't just the presentation by the team around RST that sparked lively discussions on the latest developments in the aerospace & defence sector, but also other exciting insights - from Airbus Defence & Space, the Max Planck Institute, Helsing, Sopra-Steria, and the German Armed Forces, among others.
A successful event!
